New Donors at Summer Blood Drive
August 14, 2023
Assistant Professor Madeleine Oudin was able to give blood in the U.S. for the first time at a blood drive organized by Karen O'Hagan and the Department of Chemistry last week.
The FDA recently updated its eligibility guidance, making the rules more data-driven and inclusive. Individuals who spent time in certain European countries between 1980 and 2001, like Oudin, can now donate and all donors are assessed individually regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
"I signed up right away when I saw that the new rules had taken effect," said Oudin. She wasn't alone -- 68 Tufts community members registered to give blood and save lives at this one-day summer pop-up drive on the Medford/Somerville campus. As thanks, the MGH Bloodmobile sent donors home with t-shirts reading "Wicked good blood donah."
Did you know...
- You save up to three lives each time you donate blood?
- Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood?
- More than 90% of us will need blood in our lifetime?
- Fewer than 5% of the eligible population donates?
